The Environment Agency has shut down an illegal waste site discovered off the A47 Leicester Road near Hinckley in Leicestershire on 5 August 2026.
An investigation was launched following the discovery of dumped waste on the land. The Environment Agency, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council and Leicestershire Police acted to close the site and prevent further environmental damage.
Ongoing investigation and appeal for information
Authorities are appealing for anyone with information, dash cam footage, mobile phone footage or CCTV to contact them. The public is also being urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity in the region immediately.
Suspicious activity could involve tipper lorries, skip lorries or articulated lorries entering derelict sites or fields. Illegal waste sites have appeared in busy areas near dual carriageways and motorways, as well as on farms and in woodland.
Wider enforcement action
The action forms part of the Environment Agency's 10 Point Plan to step up response to suspected waste crime. The plan includes expanding the use of restriction notices and orders to prevent illegal dumping.
Environment Agency officers across the region are involved in a sustained programme to strengthen prevention, improve detection and deliver more consistent enforcement.
