The Government has announced that Hinckley and Bosworth will become part of a new unitary council covering Leicestershire and Rutland from April 2028.
The decision ends a three-way reorganisation process for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. The Government chose to create two unitary councils to replace the existing 10 councils across the region.
What changes for Hinckley and Bosworth
Hinckley and Bosworth will be entirely within the unitary council for the remaining area of Leicestershire and Rutland. A separate unitary council will cover Leicester, Oadby and Wigston, plus parts of Blaby, Charnwood and Harborough.
All council services continue as usual. Nothing changes immediately, and any significant changes will only come into effect in 2028.
Council leader's response
Stuart Bray, leader of Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, said the decision to abolish district and borough councils was not the right approach. He said the council would now focus on securing the best outcome for residents by working with partners across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to protect local services and support staff.
Bray also noted the reforms were not part of Labour's election manifesto and questioned whether there was a clear mandate for changes of this scale.
